Mama Kelce's Famous Dinner Rolls Recipe Is Not What You Think by Donna John

The Kansas City Chiefs have always been my second favorite NFL team to pull for. My Houston Texans have my heart, but after a trip with my best friend to her hometown of KC, I fell in love with the city – and then some of the players on the football team. I know for a fact I'm not the only one who loves watching Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce make magic on the field.

After watching an episode of Mythical Kitchen on YouTube with Travis' big brother, Jason Kelce, I discovered his mom makes magic in the kitchen with her dinner rolls recipe. Jason said the one constant at their Thanksgiving dinner table was "the Mama Kelce dinner rolls."

I had no intention of making her dinner rolls – until I discovered what they were and that I had made them a dozen times at least with my kids when they were young. Her dinner rolls are not really "dinner rolls" at all, but are basically the 1969 Pillsbury Bake-Off winning recipe for Magic Marshmallow Crescent Puffs. You know, those crescent rolls that are stuffed with a marshmallow that magically disappears. I love Mama Kelce's idea of a dinner roll! If we can have sweet potato casserole that tastes like dessert at Thanksgiving (or any time), why not a dinner roll, too?

All you need to make these absolutely delicious marshmallow crescent puffs is refrigerated crescent roll dough, granulated sugar, flour, ground cinnamon, marshmallows and butter. The rolls take no time to prep and bake up in about 12 minutes. The marshmallow, cinnamon and sugar melt together and form a sweet, moist center for the flaky, tender crescents. They are a bite of pure heaven.

I always thought of these magic marshmallow crescent puffs as dessert or for breakfast instead of cinnamon rolls, but now they are going to make it to my dinner table. Thanks, Mama Kelce (and go KC!).

Ingredients

• 1/4 cup granulated sugar
• 2 tablespoons flour
• 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
• 2 cans (8 ounces each) refrigerated crescent rolls (I used Pillsbury™ Original Crescent Rolls)
• 16 large marshmallows
• 1/4 cup butter, melted

Recipe Notes

• If you want to make these for breakfast, brunch or dessert, add the glaze that was on the original recipe. To make the glaze, stir together 1/2 cup powdered sugar, 1/2 teaspoon vanilla, 2 to 3 teaspoons milk and 1/4 cup chopped nuts. Drizzle over the hot rolls.

• Be sure to seal the marshmallow in the crescent roll well by pinching the dough together. If you don't, this is what you'll end up with. But don't worry! You may have a little mess to cleanup, but they still taste delicious.
  

• Store any leftover rolls in an airtight container on the counter.

• If you don't have large marshmallows, you could use mini marshmallows.

• If you have any leftover cinnamon-sugar mixture and/or melted butter, you could sprinkle or brush it over the top of the rolls before baking.
  

• If you don't need 16 dinner rolls, cut the recipe in half.

Here's how to make it: 

1. Separate the crescent dough into triangles. Stir together the granulated sugar, flour and cinnamon. Melt the butter in another small bowl.
   
2. Dip the marshmallows into the butter and then coat them in the cinnamon-sugar mixture. Place one marshmallow on the end of the triangle and roll up. Press the sides to seal completely.
   
3. Dip the bottom of the sealed crescent roll ball into the butter and place in a muffin tin. Repeat with remaining triangles.
   
4. Bake in a preheated 375-degree F oven for about 12 to 15 minutes, or until golden brown. Serve hot.
