Barack Obama Speech: The Former President Reminds Us to Stand Up to Bullies, Not Follow Them by Mike Prochaska

We are supposed to stand up to bullies – not follow them. During Barack Obama’s speech at the University of Illinois on September 7, 2018, he reminded America that we need to stand up against bullies. To me, it is crazy that the 44th President of the United States has to remind America to stand up against bullies instead of following them.

Often, however, for a group to be mobilized into action, a spark is required – a single person standing up loudly and firmly against the action of a bully. In Obama's case, he is standing up against President Trump by speaking out and reminding Americans they must vote and stand up against hate.

Have you been a victim of bullying? Here are some tips to help:

• Look bullies in the eyes and tell them to stop. Calmly, but firmly, say, "I want you to stop right now."

• Bullies target the "weak." A bully tends to pick on those who they identify as being unwilling or unable to stand up for themselves or who appear to be weaker.

• Stand tall and stare them down. Pay attention to the way you hold yourself physically in the presence of bullies, even if they are bigger than you.

• Defend yourself with smarts. Don't allow yourself to get sucked into an insult exchange with a bully. When they go low, you go high.
